Demolition commences
The main Hospital complex, which closed in 1991, is in a dilapidated state of repair and like many buildings of its age, asbestos is present. The buildings are derelict due to the asbestos, water penetration, vandalism and fire. The state of the buildings renders refurbishment largely impractical and demolition of the buildings started this month. The chapel and administration blocks will be retained as they are locally listed buildings and it is likely that the water tower will also be retained as this is a local landmark and a number of people have expressed a desire for it to be preserved.

English Partnerships has invited developers to submit expressions of interest to develop the Cane Hill site.
A pre-qualification questionnaire (PQQ) for the site has now been published. Developers have been asked to provide their responses to the PQQ by mid-April and from this information a shortlist of around 5 organisations will be invited to submit a more detailed submission. The short-listed developers will be provided with a design brief for Cane Hill which will outline the main principles for the scheme and the aspirations for the site. The design brief will be worked up in consultation with the local community and stakeholders. A third newsletter will be distributed during March which will contain feedback from the previous community consultation. A further consultation event will be held after Easter to look at the preferred development option in more detail. Please see the Consultation Programme section and community consultation results (pdf 37KB) for more information.

English Partnerships' Aspirations
Cane Hill was acquired by English Partnerships' as part of a portfolio of NHS Hospital sites. English Partnerships is responsible for ensuring these sites contribute to the government’s policy to
create sustainable communities and make the best use of surplus public sector land.
The Cane Hill site provides a real opportunity to deliver a community which is well-planned and properly supported by transport links, infrastructure and community facilities; creating a place where people want to live, work and relax, and where businesses want to invest.
